There are regimes around the world where the tribes ruling an area treat the tribes not ruling the area with such a level of hatred and cruelty that the average Western society chattering classes shut it out of their minds. They dismiss any thoughts about it because the whole country is labelled as being ‘underdeveloped’, almost sub-human, and unable to know better.
Now and again reaction does build against the tribes that should know better. As an example, the Western world moved against apartheid and the terrible way that the black indigenous population of South Africa were treated. Songs came from the rich Western pop stars looking for a cause, marches and protests were held, and orchestrated people power helped free Nelson Mandela and give equal rights to all ethnic groups trying to live in the common land.
Another tribe that should know better are the Jews currently occupying the land they’ve called Israel. Part of their existence appears to include the need to herd and treat like cattle a rival tribe that lives in the same land. The way the Jews treat Palestinians as such a lower form of life, killing them at any opportunity, taking their houses, spraying them with illegal chemicals, and driving them out of the fertile areas of their shared yet disputed land is beyond outrageous.
Yet, for some reason, the rest of the world allows this, making only muted objections when stories reach the outside world of just some of the more extreme of the horrors the Jews are inflicting hourly on the Gazans they’ve herded into a giant pen-like concentration camp they’ve forced Gaza to become for its 1.5 million souls. (Talk about the abused becoming the abuser, eh?)
The Israeli killing of so many people on the aid ships brings the plight of Gazans into the public eye for a very short while of course, but all too soon it goes quiet again. We’ll have forgotten all about it next week, shame on us.
Isn’t it time that huge campaigns like those mounted demanding change in South Africa were mounted by the comfortable chattering classes in the West? Where’s Sting and his cronies? What about the film and TV stars of Holywood leaping to say this daily carnage is unacceptable?
Why the silence?
It’s time to free Gaza.
