The oldest man in the world

I read with interest about the world’s oldest man. As I get older and start to wonder at what point I am likely to wake up one morning to find myself dead, things like how old people are and why they are still alive is becoming a bit of an obsession.

So, I read about this guy in Cuba who is probably 123 years old. He might be 4 years younger, nobody is too sure. Even at 119, he is still the oldest man in the world.

Old people are always asked by patronising journalists what their secret to long life is. It’s a stock question the answer to which I used to ignore. More recently, I sit up straight and listen extremely attentively like the dog on the His Master’s Voice record labels. (Ok, so only old people know about that dog, what’s yer point?)

So, hearing that this “remarkably coherent” Benito Martinez was still walking, talking and cracking jokes (how patronising is it to have people say, “Yeah, he can still crack jokes!” as a measure of your cohesion?), rather than some vegetable tended to by great great grandchildren, what was his bloody secret to a long life? TELL ME NOW!

Apparently, he claims his long life is down to no tobacco or alcohol, but “good food and a fair share of women”.

*YES!*

I’m afraid I had to leap to my feet (which I too am able to do) and punch the air. I don’t do drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, but I love the very natural acts of eating very good food, and sex.

So, imagine my happiness at discovering that I may well be on the right track and formula to live to at least 123 years old. That’s made my month, that has.
