The unusual thing of two little 10 year old girls from Soham disappearing at the same time, or the little 3 year old girl who disappeared after being neglected by her parents whilst holidaying in Portugal always rockets the ‘missing persons’ thing into the public eye. Likewise the little girl kidnapped in Wales. We’ve all got memories of a ‘missing person’ case we’ve seen on the news that touched us.
But, we probably need to look at this whole issue a little bit closer, since the police have just announced that they’ve ‘wound down’ their response to the 900 calls a day they get reporting people missing.
Let’s stop and think about that figure, 900. That’s 328,500 each year. Somebody goes missing every 2 minutes, every day, every week, every year.
A lot are later found, but most are not. They estimate that around 300,000 missing persons remain missing.
That’s 300,000 from the UK alone that are never found.
300,000?
And that’s only the reported ones. Add on to that the ones that aren’t reported because there’s nobody who cares, and the figure is probably a lot greater.
If we had 300,000 people dying each year from a preventable disease, or being shot or stabbed to death, the country would be up in arms demanding something be done and done quickly. How can 300,000 people just vanish? Is it really that possible to so easily dispose of a body that it never gets found? Do they get taken out of the country as slaves? Can so many people really fall into or under things by accident and never be found?
I mean, in the UK alone, we are talking about 820 people each day and every day just disappearing forever. Think about it. 820 people.
I mean, if we were a flock of sheep and our number was being systematically reduced as selected members of our flock were being plucked up, killed and prepared for food, leaving no trace for the rest of us to see, it would make some vague kind of sense.
820 people a day in the UK alone. What are we feeding? Some strange inter-dimensional species that we can’t see or perceive? The slave trade? Sex fiends? Murder fetishists?
More importantly, why aren’t we screaming and panicking about it?
I don’t get the lack of fuss. Do you?
