The natural world is doing strange things

There be strange things happenin’ in the natural world, I tell ye.

Mount Etna recently decided to erupt.  Heck, it’s a volcano, and that’s what they do.  It was the fifth eruption this year and didn’t last for too long.  Ok, it did close Sicily’s main airport for a while, and did all the normal stuff you expect associated with a volcano erupting, with one exception.

All digital clocks, including those on phones, or inside computers leapt forward by 15 minutes.  Yep, for some inexplicable reason all the locals suddenly found themselves 15 minutes in the future.  Nobody knows why.

What caused the sudden time travel?  Yes, we could talk about alien abductions, and other spooky made-up stuff, but logically it was the ‘volcano wot dunnit’!

But how?

Was it some sort of associated electromagnetic pulse?  And how exactly did it affect the clocks?  Nobody knows, although there are different theories of course.

Here’s another thing.

A few weeks ago there was a mini tsunami which hit tide-gauges, recording a wave of up to 40 centimetres high along the Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Hampshire coastline.  It’s speculated that this was due to a landslide on part of the Continental Shelf some 600 kilometres away, although no actual seismic activity of note was recorded.  The ‘wave’ coming in to land was relatively tiny, but it did wet the legs of tourists who were previously walking along a causeway to an isolated ‘island’ called St Michael’s Mount.  The causeway is normally ‘dry’ for long periods and only covered for a few hours a day when the tide comes in.  Suddenly, in rushed the water, flooding the causeway.

This event, whilst unusual, is not unexplained.  But something associated with it is.

Around the area, just before the mini-tsunami, people felt their hair standing on end and were becoming highly charged with static electricity.  Why?  Nobody knows why.

So, two ‘electricity’ related stories there, from the natural world of volcanoes and earthquakes/tsunamis.

But, what’s going on?  How come we are seeing associated events like clocks being affected and hair standing on end when we’ve not seen them before?

I know that our magnetic poles appear to have begun the slow process of swapping places, but is it in some way related?

Most importantly, if these are just the side effects of some natural phenomena, are they going to get worse?  Will the electrical or magnetic anomalies affect our brains, changing memory or perception, or moods and behaviour?  What is yet to come?
