Sam Hall is the newest try-out or signing to BBC Radio 1, and she’s been sitting in for Dev on the Early Show. The Early Show is of course the warm-up for the Chris Moyles Breakfast Show, and as a Chris Moyles listener (well, at the very least a listener to the first 45 minutes or so because that’s the best part of the show) I’ve been listening to the latter parts of her.
Oh dear.
Nice girl, and all that, and maybe it’s nerves, but she sounds like a commercial radio DJ full of cliché catchphrases and rattling away without actually listening to herself to check that what she’s saying makes any sense. How many days now has she been giving out the running order for the day and somehow saying ‘9pm’ instead of ‘7pm’. Indeed, one day she said “…and he’s on at 9pm. Then at 9pm it’s…”.
When talking to the studio producer or talking to a listener participating in a quiz she just wasn’t listening to what they were saying. When she should have been responding to what was being said she was busy talking over them with more cliché catchphrases and it was very embarrassing.
Now, Sam has a history of radio presenting having appeared on commercial radio shows where she plays specialist music, and her credentials as a club and party DJ are fantastic, maybe she’s an even better producer. She also does ‘good face’ (as in, she’s very camera friendly), and is maybe far more well known as Goldierocks, having appeared on TV as a DJ and part of T4’s ‘Pop Up Quiz’.
Her voice is good, but she needs to think before vibrating her vocal chords it, and maybe calm down a bit in order to engage the brain. Then she’ll be brilliant, and I can see her being a very welcome permanent feature and a strong part of Radio 1’s future line-up.
