It started as one an hour. Within a week it became two an hour.
That’s two too many.
I’m talking about the invasion of old records being played by BBC Radio 1. Old Christmas records. Yeuch.
Why is a radio station that is designed to play new and current music insisting on playing 40 year old records?
It’s not just me it makes no sense to. Every time they do it, Twitter and texts to the studio are dominated by exasperated listeners all asking the same question: Why?
What on earth is a song by, for example, ‘Slade‘ or ‘Wizard‘ from the 1970s doing on BBC Radio 1?
No problem with them being played ad nauseam on an oldies-oriented service like BBC Radio 2. BBC Radio 2 listeners like all the oldies and enjoy the same records being played over and over again year after year after year at Christmas.
But this is not what BBC Radio 1 is about. BBC Radio 1 shouldn’t be playing the old songs more suited to BBC Radio 2 or some of the commercial radio stations. BBC Radio 1 is the home of new and current music. Slade, Wizard, Band Aid, Jona Lewie and the Pogues are not new or current music. Not by many decades.
If Professor Green or One Direction record a ‘Christmassy’ song, even if it’s an old traditional song, then fair enough. The song is then relevant because of who it is doing the singing.
Indeed, over the years in the (Christmas) ‘live lounge’ various artists have sung Christmassy songs. Why not play some of these from the last few years twice an hour?
Christmas songs from relevant artists is fine. But, please BBC Radio 1, just delete all the old rubbish from the previous Millennium.

Chris, don’t disagree with you too much but do you really think that BBC radio one really do play new music during the day when they are not playing old Christmas music? Now if BBC radio one were playing An all day version of Zane Lowe (You know the Aussie who does 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm) then I would be with you a hundred and fifty per cent, but they don’t. They play a load of old X factor (and a load of similar stuff) between 7.00 and 7.00 pm. XFM is at times more adventurous than them.
Radio one don’t do a bad job too badly, but let’s not eulogise them too much, as they are not as great as they sometime think they are.
Otherwise, take a little listen to Radio Three in the mornings or the evenings or the weekends. Okay a little elitist, but Jesus God, the music is good. And they don’t crap on about x factor or how many kangeroos testicles the zed list celeb ate last night on ITVs Get me out of here, I am a little Prick.
