Awful old records on Radio 1

It started as one an hour.  Within a week it became two an hour.

That’s two too many.

I’m talking about the invasion of old records being played by Radio 1.  Old Christmas records.  Bah Humbug.

Why is a radio station that is designed to play new and current music insisting on playing 40 year old records?

It’s not just me it makes no sense to. Every time they do it, Twitter and texts to the studio are dominated by exasperated listeners all asking the same question: Why?

What on earth is a song by, for example, ‘Slade’ or ‘Wizard’ from the 1970s doing on Radio 1?

No problem with them being played ad nauseam on an oldies-oriented service like Radio 2.  Radio 2 listeners like all the oldies and enjoy the same records being played over and over again year after year after year at Christmas.

But this is not what Radio 1 is about.  Radio 1 shouldn’t be playing the old songs more suited to Radio 2 or some of the commercial radio stations.  Radio 1 is the home of new and current music.  Slade, Wizard, Band Aid, Jona Lewie and the Pogues are not new or current music.  Not by many decades.

If Professor Green or One Direction record a ‘Christmassy’ song, even if it’s an old traditional song, then fair enough.  The song is then relevant because of who it is doing the singing.

Indeed, over the years in the (Christmas) ‘live lounge’ various artists have sung Christmassy songs.  Why not play some of these from the last few years twice an hour?

Christmas songs from relevant artists is fine.  But, please Radio 1, just delete all the old rubbish from the previous Millennium.

  1. I have pondered this question many times myself and have not come up with a definitive response.
you see, really , if you think about it , the whole concept of Christmas is stooped in traditions that go back decades , and even centuries. To really be what Radio 1 should be , they should not do Christmas at all. Basically , they either do it , or they don't. can you imagine to complaints – probably mainly from licence payers who never even listen to Radio 1 , if they just ignored Christmas. You cannot realistically just do current of very recent Christmas records because , well , they just don't really make them any more because it's not cool. Any that are sort of Christmassy tend not to chart that well any more. The nearest we can rely on to being a record that was intended to be number 1 at Christmas is a cover version of an old record performed by the winner of that years X factor.
The cool pirate radio stations in London don't do Christmas because , it's just not what they do , so there's no point , and I think that's fair enough.
But it is still to politically unacceptable for the state public service broadcaster to not do Christmas , so they are compelled to just play all the same old re-cycled pop hits of the past that most of us are sick of hearing , year after year. I get the feeling that the presenters are somewhat awkward about having to play them , but they are under orders to do so as they are added to the playlist as must plays.
That's my thoughts on it anyway.
