I was first introduced to the Goldie Lookin Chain song “Your Mother’s Got A Penis” when I was listening to Zane Lowe (Radio One, of course). I think they may have done it live in the studio. I laughed out loud at what was a totally brilliant song. That was a bit embarrassing because I was on a 48 bus at the time. I immediately downloaded the track when I got home and played it to myself on many occasions, then forgot about it, as it was quite a while ago.
Goldie Lookin Chain then crossed over into ‘mainstream’ with the “Guns don’t kill people, Rappers do” song.
So, with Goldie Lookin Chain reaching mainstream comes the need to play “Your Mother’s Got a Penis” on mainstream. However, the word ‘penis’ is a bit, well, taboo. So, a mix of the song for daytime play was made with the word ‘penis’ missing. It comes out as “Your Mother’s Got a …”. So, am I to assume that hundreds of young daytime listeners were banging their heads against the wall, rioting in the streets, or screaming in total confusion, “My mother’s got a WHAT? A WHAT? Tell me!”
Will kids be traumatised by the not knowing what on earth it is their mother’s got rather than if they just heard the bloody word ‘penis’?
It seems ridiculous to mix a whole version of a song with an essential part of the title or even the thrust of the song missing. I think they should have substituted a different word, or even put a silly noise in there. Sadder still is the reality that such a brilliant song has to be censored at all.
