What another totally brilliant show from ‘Chappers and Dave’ on Radio 1 sitting in for Vernan Kay. I’ve enthused about this pairing before. Mark Chapman is normally the sports reporter and ‘voices off’ in the afternoon show with Scott Mills, whilst Dave is normally Chris Moyles’ sidekick at breakfast. Together, however, they have what appears to be a very natural ability to ‘bounce’ off each other without having to be nasty. Both seem naturally very witty and both are able to speak clearly and instantly about most things without resorting to obvious gimics or shouting at each other.
I guess to pair them together permanently would be to cause an imbalance to the other shows, but maybe it is time to evolve and allow this pairing to happen. The Chris Moyles format of Dave being the butt of Moyles’ bullying is maybe coming to end of its run, and whilst I’m not sure Moyles can do any other format, certain Dave is proving that he can.
I’d dare the Controller to try out Chappers and Dave for breakfasts whilst Moyles is away one week. I’d guess this would unnerve Moyles, but it would be a very interesting experiment for the future.
