It’s Flashback Friday. Every Friday we bring back a golden oldie article from yesteryear. A chance for you to re-read it and see if it is still relevant today!
I have always searched for a News programme that speaks my language. I have finally found it! The nightly Seven PM News on BBC Three has got to be one of the funniest and yet informative programmes on the air. Currently it is presented by the heavily pregnant yet extremely radiant Tazeen Ahmad (who also does the excellent ’60 seconds’ newswrap inbetween BBC Three programmes) and the not so pregnant Eddie Mair, who sometimes seems to be Patrick O’Connell.
The chemistry between them is really good and the undertone of the whole programme, quite frankly, is to take the piss out of the news. Not in a bad way. They have, for example, rye sideways looks at the reporting from the Michael Jackson trial rather than dwelling on the facts of the trial, and go more for the gossip behind the news around the world generally, often stopping to discuss with the reporters, who is wearing what or other trivia that might be being discussed by the viewers on the sofa at home. The nightly parody of Desperate Housewives, when talking of the desperate politicians fighting to get in to Number 10, is nothing short of genius.
I assume this is news aimed at people who aren’t that interested in news, or news for people who look at news from a more open minded angle, or news for those who can see the funny side of all the stuff we are supposed to take seriously. Actually, I’m not sure who this news is aimed at, but it is aimed at me. This means someone will come along and ban it or pass a law against it, or say nobody’s watching it. Until they do, I’m there each night for a refreshing blast of news the way I like it.
