The Cardinal Sin

(Cardinal O’Brien poses with pal Jimmy Savile and some children)

I suppose Cardinal Keith O’Brien didn’t actually rape anybody.

As far as we can tell he just made homosexual advances on a number of trainee priests.  As far as we know this didn’t consist of much more than gentle discussion or coercion.  The priests were not children, and as far as we know, there in no suggestion that Cardinal O’Brien made any similar advances upon any children.

When he finally, er, ‘came out’ about his gay past, he said, “I wish to take this opportunity to admit that there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal.

To those I have offended, I apologise and ask forgiveness. To the Catholic Church and people of Scotland, I also apologise.

I will now spend the rest of my life in retirement. I will play no further part in the public life of the Catholic Church in Scotland.

Now, it seems to me that “fallen below the standards expected of me” is nowhere near the level of admission that, actually, he’d been having and trying to have sexual relationships with other men.  It’s more appropriate to what should be said if he’d accidentally brushed their penis through their trousers with the back of his hand whilst trying to squeeze past them.  It’s almost like being in denial.

Add to this his public outcry about homosexuality and marriage for same sex couples, and he really is in denial, isn’t he?

With the admission that he had had homosexual sex, he then decided to retire, saying he was a bit “disappointed” about that.

The Catholic Church is full of this type of hypocrisy, and it has its hold over the minds of those suffering from the religion virus their parents infected them with such that they will hate gays yet ‘forgive’ homosexual Cardinals.  Instead of rejecting O’Brien or doing something to excommunicate him from the organisation, they’ll probably sentence him to a couple of Hail Mary’s, pat him on his back and send him on his way to a long and happy highly paid retirement.

The reason he’ll get virtually no ‘punishment’?

Because those higher than him don’t accept he did anything wrong.
